Regulars dot the beautifully decorated dining room and conversations with the friendly and attentive wait staff reflect a down-home familiarity that lets newbies know this won’t be their last visit. Steaming plates of eggs benedict (Voted #1 in Orange County) and Italian-inspired breakfast selections such as lemon ricotta pancakes and “The Godfather” three egg omelet start the day off for hungry customers who have been following Owner Marty Colleary’s culinary endeavors since 1987. Former proprietor of the popular Rockwell’s restaurant in Villa Park, Marty took a break from the restaurant business in 2006 to focus on Creative Wedding Cakes, a successful undertaking that he and his wife still run together. Missing the hustle and bustle of restaurant ownership, Marty couldn’t help but keep his eyes open for a new location and when it popped up on Tustin Avenue in Orange, he hounded L&S Management for the opportunity to open shop.
Colleary’s Bistro and Bakery is a real family affair. Beautiful artwork painted by Marty’s sister sets the tone for this clean and classy space. Marty acts as executive chef, supervises the kitchen and manages the catering. His wife Wendy handles all of the bookkeeping. Partner and former customer Jennifer Reed, a seasoned restaurant pro with 25 years of experience, manages the front of the house. It’s clear that this bistro is home to Jennifer and she attends to every detail with care and pride. Jennifer’s husband John handles all of the social media activity and they have been rewarded with a 4.5-star rating on yelp thanks to the creativity and talent of Colleary’s chefs.
Farm fresh salads and lamb burgers are a favorite choice for lunch diners. House made pasta dishes and Saturday night prime rib also bring in a crowd. Truly committed to the community, Marty and Jennifer host monthly meetings by local groups and go the extra mile by creating special menus for holidays like Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. In a culinary world often dominated by snooty service and trendy dishes – one visit to Cleary’s Bistro and Bakery will take you back to neighborhood restaurants the way the used to be: full of family, friends, laughter and DELICIOUS food.
